Quincy had her poultry show today. I am on the record when I say that I was impressed with her today. The judge was lengthy. He talked about every single bird in the chicken barn. He took forever actually! Quincy was super patient, paid attention and even learned some things about raising chickens.
Quincy has a Rhode Island Red pullet named rainbow that is like a big baby. Quincy loves this particular chicken! Rainbow got a red ribbon because her feet and beak have too much black on them. Quincy also took a barred rock pullet (Patches) and a barred rock rooster (Loudy). We found out today that the rooster has too many points on his comb, so he got a red ribbon. Patces doesn't have even bars, but he liked her breed characteristics over all and she got a blue! This judge was very thorough and particular. At some points I wondered if he was making some of the stuff up, but I would have no way of knowing! ;)
Quincy also did something today that I am exceptionally proud of her for. She tried poultry showmanship. She had to show the judge the correct way to put a chicken in and out of a pen, identify the parts of a chicken, show the judge how to identify the types of feathers and explain the differences between hens, pullets, roosters and multipurpose breeds. She got a blue ribbon!
It takes a bit of bravery to try something like this and she had to remember quite a bit of information! She really loves the poultry project and is trying hard to learn about raising healthy birds!
All the exhibitors got gift certificates or free merchandise at the feed store!
Fairs are great places to try out things you have 'heard' - such as that goats love Doritos! Cameron confirms that yes, indeed goats do love them! Of course I have also seen them eat bark off trees and paper, take it for what it is worth!
The little girls have been extremely helpful and good so far! We are having a good time!
