Some projects

Cameron was home from his trip exactly 24 hours when he was playing basketball and got hurt. Yesterday's project! He has some wicked bruising and was having a hard time walking. I took him for an x-ray but it is just a really bad sprain. He is now wearing a boot and ankle brace and has resumed normal activites. Hopefully he will heal quickly.

This dog became a project today. He showed up this morning. He is a really nice dog and knows a lot of tricks. Quincy named him and wants to keep him. We drove around to all the neighbors and nobody knows him. I have an appointment to get him checked for a chip and then he will be going to the pet resort in town and they will try to locate his owners. We have enough dogs already!

Science is not something that schools spend a lot of time teaching to the younger grades these days. Or at least in our district it seems to be lacking. I am not blaming the school, they are so busy trying to stay compliant they just can't. That is why we are doing some science with the kids whenever we have the opportunity. This summer, we have a few projects going. One is we are attempting to grow our own meal worms. They are a primary source of protein for the bearded dragon, although if we end up with a lot, we can feed the chickens and turkeys a nice treat! If times ever get really hard, they are good sources of protein for humans as well, however I pray we never have to resort to that!
Our first batch is doing well and we have some changing to pupa. This is the 3rd stage of the life cycle of a dark wing beetle.

We are also learning about growing our own food from seeds. We have a (very small) cherry tree growing from pits of cherries we enjoyed! And the photo above is a lemon that Preston is growing. We are also growing herbs indoors and planning to use them when we make salsa and pickles!

The best part is the kids do not even realize that they are learning on summer break!
