My mom has been a bus driver for 40 years. She has decided to retire. Like everything else she has done in her life, she has done a great job. She has hauled hundreds of kids to school and back, and only lost a couple. Kidding. She hasn't ever lost anyone. She started driving a bus when I was in the 6th grade and needed braces. I tease her about whether they are paid off or not. She has hundreds of funny stories, has made a lot of friends, earned a lot of respect, and cleaned up more messes than I care to think about. Bus driving is a thankless job, unless you hurt someone, and then they will massacre you. It is not an easy job. It comes with a tremendous amount of responsibility, very little say in whether or not you are going out, and you have to be able to handle children acting like children, while simultaneously driving a large vehicle down the road. People expect you to be safe, pay attention to their kids, make sure that they are on time, and not get mad when other people are running behind. It takes a lot of grace for people, a lot of tongue biting, and some good driving skills. I have enjoyed learning from her, working with her, and being able to see her every day. I will miss her waving at me next year! I do hope she enjoys retirement - God knows she earned it! (Thanks for the braces mom - my teeth have never been straighter!).
I think it is neat that SFT had 3 generations of bus drivers this year (4 if you count Wrenley!).
We had a little breakfast at the bus barn in her honor this morning. Wrenley was a super hostess - throwing away all the trash! Madison helped me with making food, Jim was awesome enough to deliver it for us! Madison got there a few minutes early and set everything up!
And Mallory helped me make this project for mom. A top secret project. I appreciate their help!
