Today was the first day in I don’t know how long, we didn’t have anything to do. Or so I thought. Turns out, Harper had to be at the high school graduation to play in the band during the ceremony. I had a few errands to run. Quincy had friends graduating, so she agreed to bring Harper home afterwards. Which meant I got to go shopping all by myself. A rarity. I even went to some of my favorite places. And it took me forever because nobody was telling me to hurry. It probably wasn’t what I should have been doing, but it was delightful. I didn’t even spend much money. But I did get myself a couple of projects, which I will share later. I also got a couple of hooks so I could hang up my bird house and my wind chimes that Mallory bought me for my patio oasis. Jim helped me fill the clearance sale pots. I am so excited about them! I got some flowers at the farmer’s market. I think I have a couple of components picked out that are going to make the oasis truly spectacular. For now, it looks pretty good- and I enjoy sitting down there listening to the birds sing.
Above my oasis project is our back deck. I enjoy this space as well. For a while now I’ve been feeding the birds out there. We have a red headed woodpecker who comes up frequently. Sometimes with his girlfriend, sometimes just by himself. I get a kick out of him stuffing the sunflower seeds in the top posts of the deck rail. I know it’s not original, but I have named him Woody and I am always happy to see him. This week I did laugh when I looked out and noticed he was drinking the sugar water from the hummingbird feeder. He’s a bit of a glutton.
Ok maybe my kids are right - I am turning into a crazy empty nester with weird hobbies. But am I hurting anyone? No. And I entertain myself. So leave it alone.
Jim’s coworker suggested that we put down cardboard in between the rows in the garden. Then mulch over the top of it - she says it will help with weed control and at the end of the year you just till it back into the soil and it adds organic material back. We decided to try it. We had a large number of chewey boxes and a few others we had been meaning to get rid of. Jim broke down the boxes while I placed them and then he helped me mulch over the tops with some old hay bales that he got from somewhere. We didn’t get done, but if it works the way it should, it will cut my weeding and hoeing time down significantly.
Jim and I then tackled weed wacking and weeding out the flowers at the end of the driveway. This is where I really miss Preston. That boy loves to weed wack. I don’t mind it, but I am terrible at it. I wish they made a weed wacker for short people. Heck, maybe I should invent a whole line of garden equipment for short people. It is a short person problem. If you aren’t short, you probably don’t understand. We accomplished a lot. It was a good day!
