There will be signs….

There I am - like every single March, watching for signs of spring.  Is the grass looking a little greener?  Are those leaves budding out?  Look! Tulips popping up!  Dad’s yard (and mom’s basement) are filled with calves!  And yesterday, I came home to twins!  It was a perfect day to be born!  Beautiful weather, sunshine to help dry your fluffy new fur, and a light breeze- unlike Kansas which is usually plagued with wind!
And there is just nothing that I love more than baby anything.  Baby humans- my favorite!  Baby goats - probably a close second.  Baby ducks- absolutely cannot resist them.  Kittens, puppies, calves, little fuzzy chicks, and little naked bunnies.  I’m a junkie!  And I love spring!
I only took 2 goats to the breeder. Since I broke my shoulder, I got them there about a month or 6 weeks later than I wanted.  These won’t probably be big enough for my girls to show at the fair in August, but they will be a good addition to the family - for the black headed one, and a source of income for us for the brown guy.   I am proud of Quincy’s goat, Kendra.  She was a bottle kid and I know you have to watch, because they don’t always have good mothering skills.  Kendra birthed while I was on the bus, had both babies clean and on their feet nursing by the time we got home.  Saige is worried about them, she can’t stand when babies get sick, but these seemed really good!   We shall see, because if you’ve ever raised livestock, you know how it can be - messy!

I am a little sad that this one is a buckling, as he is about the cutest thing ever with his little dappled face.  Maybe I should keep him as a billy?  Maybe I should.  Maybe I better look into building another pen?  :)  The sun and warm weather have obviously put me in a better place mood wise, I am again enjoying chores, thinking about building and adding instead of cussing my existence.  Funny how that happens!

Another sign of spring - March Madness.  Cameron's bank sent him over to work at the tournament.  He was having a little more fun than one should be when they are at work I think!

A Saige story - her class was having "food day" - she told me she wanted to make a James Cook cake.  I said no problem on taking a cake, but I am not a cake decorating kind of girl, and I lack the tools to pull off something of that nature.  She insured me that she knew how  to do it, if I would just buy the supplies.  THEN I got an email from her teacher.  Food day was supposed to be where you bring a dish from some part of the country and share it - and talk about what part of the country it originated from.  I asked Saige what she was going to tell people about chocolate cake.  She just grinned at me.  I emailed the teacher and told him her plans and he said YES!  Please send cake!  She made this all by herself.  She decorated it with a spoon and knife - because as I said, we lack the appropriate decorating tools.  I was actually fairly impressed with it.  Looks like James Cook to me....or what I assume he would look like since I have zero idea who that is or what he actually looks like.

Evie is doing so well in kindergarten.  I am so proud of her!  I miss her at my office though....sometimes I have to walk to the post office just to get myself back awake!

Today is the last day before spring break - if I was looking for any other signs of spring - we have reached the time of the year where the horizons glow with the light of prairie fires, smoke hangs thick in the air, and the land is black from being burned off.  It always amazes me how fast it comes back green after being burned.  I remember helping my dad and grandpa watch fires - not fully understanding what benefits it brings to the land.  Years later, I toured the Kansa Prairie research center at KSU and saw the grass plots.  The ones where they burn sections once a year, once every 5  years, once every 10 years, etc and then never.  The never plot was a disaster!  So many weeds, and brush and unhealthy vegetation.  I can't help but compare these things to what is happening in the country right now.  My hope is that we will all be greened up and better when this burning dumpster fire is over.
