Spring break things

I ran to get feed yesterday, and while I was at the feed store, I got the dogs some treats.  It makes me laugh how Carlos carries his treat around for hours, looking like he is smoking!  I know better than to go in the feed stores this time of year, between chick days, and garden center stuff, I am a giant, walking boost to the economy.  Luckily for Jim, there were no baby chicks of any type available.  Actually, there haven't been - the store people told me that they get deliveries every week and they sell out within minutes.  I am not actually surprised, as the price of eggs and the availability of eggs is crazy currently.  I can't help but wonder though, if people actually know what they are getting into when just buying up some chickens on a whim.  I love my chickens, but I know how hard they can be to get going, and how many things love to eat chicken.  Of course, we have killed our fair share of birds, so no judgement, I just always wonder.  It is better for me if there are not baby ducks around, because I can never resist, and I end up with them in my cart!  I haven't seen a single baby duck this season.

I might not have been purchasing any baby ducks, but I have been hoarding up garden items.  I got some seed potatoes.  I have them all cut up and drying, but didn't get them in the ground on St. Patrick's day like you are supposed to.  I will do it this weekend, as I am going to need to get the tiller going and get the ground ready.

And the baby duck money was spent on more berry plants.  Although I would have loved to have had him home, it is probably good that Preston didn't come back for spring break, as I have his room full of  plants that I am starting indoors.  His room is currently filled with berry plants, and I picked up a couple more.  I am researching what soil conditions I need for these things, and I am hoping that I can get them outside in a couple of weeks.  I am so excited about trying something new.

Also new, I got 2 peach trees from a local woman.  She had them started outdoors, and told me they would be ok, despite the prediction of a blizzard for tomorrow.  I got them in the ground last night.  Jim is going to help me put some fencing around them.  I have been wanting to plant an orchard since we moved, however 2 things have held me up.  One - cost - fruit trees are sort of expensive.  And 2 - we own goats.  Fruit trees (or any trees really) and goats do not mix well.  Which is why Jim is going to help me with fencing them in.  The price was right on these, and she was so helpful and knowledgeable, I left there feeling like I can do this!  I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Preston sent me some photos of him and Sunny flying kites.  He said thanks GG for the kites - her tradition of giving them out at Easter came in handy!  :)  I am glad they are enjoying spring break!  I will get to see them on Thursday, as I am attending a dam safety conference in Manhattan.  I am only attending because the keynote address was entitled "what is your dam problem?" and I thought that was pretty funny.  Ok, that might not be the "only" reason, but it was certainly a factor!

For St. Patrick's day, I decided we should have a green dinner.  I made broccoli cheddar soup, bierocks and green pudding.  The girls were not overly impressed with my culinary wizardry.  I do wonder why I don't make broccoli cheddar soup more often though - that stuff is amazing!

I got a kick out of Wrenley's St. Pat's day photos - she makes me smile.

Mallory made us pies for Sunday dinner, Cameron made us brownies.  They asked which was better, so I had to eat both.  There was no better, or worse, they were both good!  Not pictured, Madison made a homemade chocolate cake.  I had it too.  It was also very good!  :)  Hey, it was Sunday, even the Lord took a day off (from healthy eating?).

I was excited for Evelyn to meet her new baby goat.  She was so excited!  She named this baby - Black Star!  A pretty fitting name I think!  The baby is so big, and has a bit of an attitude!  I gave them their vitamin drench yesterday, she spit hers right out.  Little stinker!

Wrenley likes the goats too - but we have to watch her - she likes to put her fingers in the goat's butts and pick up poop!  Crazy kid!

Spring break is going to be a chance for us to get a little bit of down time in before we head into spring and summer activities.  I am more than ready - unfortunately, they are calling for blizzard conditions tomorrow.  Of course.  Kansas - the most bipolar weather state!
