Madison is at a bus driving conference out of town. Andrew is working and has been on call. I told Madison the easiest thing would be to just leave the girls with us this week. Poppy's first week of retirement has found him in a new role - as the 'chief' babysitter. It is a pretty good gig and he is not complaining!
We love having the grandkids around. They are fun, sweet, energetic little people.
Jim even used all his retirement gift cards to take us all to the bar!
We have had all the snacks, played with goats, swam in the freezing cold pool - after 3 inches of rain and the temperature not getting out of the 70's I was shocked at how long they stayed in the water - thanks to Aunt Bubba for swimming with them! We have played in the mud. on the swings, eaten strawberries fresh from the garden, had a small amount of lost items, and have attempted to make every day's theme "wear them out so that they sleep all night!" So far, it has worked!
Maude has been happy to have people who like to run as much as she does!
Mr. Mackey is happy to have someone who loves to poke grass and weeds his way!
I did have to laugh yesterday at Evelyn. I spent 25 minutes trying to convince her to go down the slide, that she would not get hurt, and that I would hold her hand if she wanted me to. She was up there, wanting to do it but scared. It was a long, long conversation. She ended up being rescued by Saige. A few minutes later, they were walking goats, and I overheard her tell the goat "you are the most stubborn thing alive!" And I thought - well, no sweet pea - that is not accurate!
This one is so smart, and so quiet - occasionally I have to go looking for her - she is usually into something random. She has "helped" me with feeding the animals, and at one point, I sort of cringed because I watched her spill the dog water bowl, and then get down on the floor and start lapping it up. I screamed "NO!! No! oh God no!" she does not like to get in trouble - she gave me the saddest look I have ever seen! But seriously child - we don't lick dog water off the floor. There has to be a limit someplace right? :)
The power went out Monday in the storms. It was getting close to dinner time, and they had a few snacks because I couldn't cook anything. I told the girls when the power comes back on, we will eat chicken wraps. The power came on, Wrenley went straight to her high chair. I guess she was ready to eat!
I will freely admit that although we had 8 babies at one point or another, I am severely out of practice. I am not used to having to tell kids all the steps to take, or to help them with their baths, or combing their hair. I am well past the age of carrying diapers and spare clothes everywhere. I have been dropping into bed at night and sleeping the sleep of a person who is beat. BUT, having these girls around, and thinking about future grandkids who will fill our house and our hearts with all this love makes me so happy! Worth it.
Side note - thank you to Harper and Saige who have helped us tremendously with everything from swimming, to hunting for lost items, to diaper changes and more. I appreciate it more than you will ever know!
