Disengagement

It’s Saturday.  I needed a Saturday.
But to get go Saturday, you first have to go to the football game to watch (football if you are Jim) Clayton and Harper in the marching band halftime show.
It was pretty good. They have been working hard and it showed.
I do get a kick out of those 2.  They gossip all the way to the games. Harper always looks like she is being tortured.  Clayton just rolls with life.  They are so different personality wise it is amusing. But they both have snarky comebacks and both seem to be amazing at reading people and knowing their personalities. Sometimes I just listen to their conversations and giggle. I tried to mark the photos. Because when you have such amazing photography skills it is hard to find people.

This week for some reason was hard.  Everything I touched seemed to have to be done the hard way.  I had 2 board meetings which seemed to dump more projects in my lap.  I mean, I know I get paid for doing these projects, but when I was asking for approval I was met with more research, more questions to answer, more meetings  and more engineering required. Not what I was hoping for.  And yes, I’ll get it done.  But I think I am also off emotionally and that is making my ability to be a positive, shining example of happiness that I usually am a little dim. (Yes I use sarcasm to deflect my feelings).
Today Jim and I had plans to go to the auction in Clay center.  I was excited about going.  About spending a day with him doing something fun. About getting to see Preston and Sunny for a little bit. And then we went to leave for the game and I had a flat tire.  This is my 5th flat in 2 weeks and it made me physically sad. As in the tears welled up and I just couldn’t stop feeling sad. And I knew we had to get the tire fixed so we could drive the car, but it was too late to get it fixed yesterday.  So we left it at the shop and Jim said no worries we will just drive the truck.  But for some reason that wasn’t a solution I wanted to hear. I just didn’t want to go anymore.  I just couldn’t go.  And so I sat at the game and stewed on it and finally came to the conclusion that I just needed a day to disconnect.  A day to sit in my sadness and work at my house and maybe just disengage a little.   And so that is where I am today.  Gardening, closing up beds, cleaning out animal pens, putting my hands in the dirt.  Hoping to get my car back so I can get back to doing things tomorrow, because life just keeps moving.
And I am thankful for Jim who doesn’t get upset at me pulling the plug on our plans. He just shrugged and said whatever you want is fine.  He gave me a hug and a little space to process.  It’s good to be married to a person who is flexible. I’m sorry we won’t get to go bid on quail and a kangaroo but not sorry that I get a day to wallow.

Sunday pics

Part of what I love about Sunday is running the girls ragged.  Or they run me ragged.  Whatever.  Today I thought geez they are young, I should get them to help me pick up walnuts.  And they did!  We picked up a lot!  Wrenley was upset because she could see more in the tree, and wanted me to get them for her.  The tree is way above my head. We will just have to wait for them to fall!
We have a lot of walnut trees here.  And they throw walnuts all over the yard.  They are a tripping hazard.  Last week we gave a bunch away.   This week, I think I am going to drag them over to a guy who buys black walnuts.  He lives near the lady in Scranton who sells fresh milk and vegetables.  I was sort of thinking I could also make a trip by her farm when I am over there.  At the very least, I need to take her milk jar back.  At the very best, I could use the walnut money to buy some cool stuff that I “need” from her little produce store.

Either way, if we give the walnuts away, or if I sell them , the girls were very helpful, and I appreciate the nuts not being in the areas I walk in the dark!

It might be a violation of child labor law, but they work for fudge bars and hugs.  They are awesome!

They also bring a level of chaos into the house that I miss from having kids around.  The toys everywhere, the couch pillows and cushions strewn everywhere.  Snacks needed, chocolate milk needed, crazy conversations everywhere.  I need the reminder of more carefree times in life. Of being able to have fun where you are with what is available.  Kids are awesome like that.
Sunday is my favorite day. Until you’re smacked into the fact that the weekend is over and back to reality I go.

Weekend for wackadoo

On Friday, Jim and the boys left to go to Waco to watch the Cats play against Baylor.  This boy's weekend was planned out and designed by my sons, who invited their dad to go along.  It made me really happy that they decided to do this together.  I love that they like to go do stuff together.  Of course, Colin was here a couple weeks ago, pointing out that his "childfree Saturdays" are numbered!    I think he is excited about the baby coming, and I think he is going to be a great dad!

Colin and Spencer bought a "baby wagon" and Colin was exited to take it on a road trip.  You know, to make sure it is safe before they strap "baby Dale" into it!
The Cats did not win, but from the (very small amount) I heard from Jim, it sounded like they had a good trip!  Jim came stumbling in at 2 am Sunday morning, saying it was fun and then he hit the pillow and I heard nothing else from him!  I can't wait to hear all about it when he wakes up.  I also hope he took some more photos that I can steal from his phone later.

Since Jim was gone, it meant that I had to get Harper and Clayton to the football game and attend all by myself.  I am not sure if people are aware of this, but I don't really enjoy football (or organized sports at all really).  I didn't want to sit out there by myself, and I don't really know many of the kids who are playing.  Added to the fact that the band kids have to get to the game an hour early for some random reason, and I have 2 board meetings next week that I wasn't quite ready for, I pulled the opt out card.  I dropped the band kids off on time and went and hid out in my office.  I had Harper text me at the beginning of the second quarter, and I went out in time to watch the halftime show, and the second half of the game.  I may not enjoy football, but I love the band.  Harper (on the flute) and Clayton (who you can always spot with that bright green hat he refuses to take off) did a great job!  The band kids work really hard, and although I miss seeing their old director, I really do like the new director.  And I am starting to get to know the new assistant, who is so young he could be my kid, but has a fun personality and seems to be absolutely crazy about band.

Madison keeps me supplied with lots of photos of the girls.  I need to remind her to be in the photos once in a while.  (Taking random detours in the story of this blog is my absolute right).

Saturday with Jim gone, I had some plans to do stuff I like to do.  You know, like watch this movie on Netflix I know he won't want to watch and make tuna roll ups (which he hates).  And none of the things I had in mind happened.  Instead, I had the girls help me clean.  I picked a bunch of produce out of what is left of the garden.  I helped the girls with outside chores that needed done, and then I took Quincy to pick up her car from the mechanic, and I ran some errands that we needed to take care of.  I came home and shampooed the carpet, because it needed done badly.  Then I took off with Harper so she could work at a concession stand at the Ottawa Demolition Derby for a fundraiser for her CWF group.  Now, I have been around for a while, and I have picked up a few tips for making my life easier.  Things like work the early shift.  The set up is not easy for this concession stand, but it is so much better than working the late shift when the people are drunk and grumpy because you can never stock enough Mountain Dew to mix in with their Lord Calvert.  So we had signed up for the set-up crew, and the first shift.  We took off and as we were driving up the gravel road, the tire light came on.  I stopped, and sure enough, the tire is hissing.  I make an executive decision to try to drive into town to get a can of fix a flat.  That would be a wrong decision.  We didn't make it to the highway before it was flat.  I decide to call the 4-H agent and then change the tire.  Another wrong decision.  Our car's spare tire is up under the car.  You drop it down by unscrewing a bolt in the trunk.  I cannot open my trunk, because the little switch is broken.  Jim had ordered a new switch, and it arrived, but I didn't know how to put it in, so I had laid it on the desk.  Second plan, call Mallory, and see if she will deliver a can of fix a flat, and Harper was able to crawl into the trunk to get this handy dandy air compressor that Jim put in there that runs off the cigarette lighter.  Mallory was home and delivered the prized can.  As I am bent over, trying to get the can of fix a flat into the tire, an older man stopped to "help."  He gets out, looks at the tire and says "yes ma'am, that tire is flat!"  Thanks buddy, I don't know what I would have done without you.  Fix a flat in, air compressor hooked up - and FAIL.  Air compressor is a worthless piece of junk.  So I pulled the car off the road as far as I could get it, and begged Mallory for a ride to the house to get Preston's old car.  I came inside to tell Saige I was taking the car and wash my hands, and what is happening?  Maude has somehow got the package with the trunk switch off of the desk and has chewed it to smithereens.  I cannot even make this stuff up!  I couldn’t even be mad - it was just too stupid.  We picked up the now dead switch, and jumped into Preston’s old car. Not what I wanted to drive to Ottawa, but at least it does have air conditioning!  It is loud and has a smell that can only be described as pee, bad cologne and regret.  We were an hour late, but we did make it there!
And just as I recalled, it was slammed.  Harper ran her legs off, and I made about 400 nachos (not an exaggeration) and I lost count of how many batches of popcorn I ran through the machine.  Problem was when our shift ended, only half the people who were supposed to be there for the next shift showed up.  Being the guilt driven individual that I am, I told the 4-H agent that Harper and I could stay.  So that is how we ended up working until I felt like my feet would fall off, and until I decided that I will never touch another nacho again, ever in my life.  Also, I am almost positive that my hair will smell like popcorn for at least a week. Long winded way of saying I have 2 of these concession stands left to do (for Saige's CWF group) and then I will never set foot in Ottawa during the car show, or the demolition derby ever again.  Ever.  Never.  Never again!  Too many people.  Too much redneck, even for me.

Sadly, when our shift was over, we still needed to grab a few groceries.  Unfortunately, it was so late that the only thing still open was Walmart.  I have been trying to avoid Walmart.  Actually, I have been actively trying to avoid all major retail stores.  But desperate times call for desperate measures.  We ran in and got the bare necessities for groceries.  Jim and I will run some night this week to get the rest.  I did make an impulse buy when I saw these cute ghost blankets though.  I have been meaning to get the couches covered back up anyway (due to the dogs and cats).  When I got them home, I have to say I am not sorry!  They are cute!  And you know what they say?  Happy wife, happy life!
This is Sunday, and I woke up for mass to find that I was feeling about half brain dead, Saige woke up sick with a head cold, and I decided I am not getting dressed or leaving the house today.  The girls crawled back in bed, and I am alternating between working on this blog post and looking at my phone.  I have made cherry turn overs and have a list going of things I have to accomplish today.  I need a day to just be.  Sometimes I look at what the week holds for me, and I get a little overwhelmed.  That is how I am feeling today.  A tad overwhelmed. I know I will be ok, but I am taking this day to get my head back on straight.  To do little projects, and to perhaps put my feet up for a bit and watch that movie.

Band (and people) on the run

This week has been filled with meetings, and events, and dinners and just stuff to run to.  Harper's band had their Band on the Run fundraiser.  Basically, an old fashioned walk-a-thon.  Harper walked, and since I had to be there anyway, I volunteered as a lap counter.  It was a nice night, and I think the kids raised a lot of money to go towards their trip to Nashville in the spring.  Harper does not enjoy this sort of thing.  It is not her idea of a good time to go walk laps, or to leave home for that matter, but she accomplished meeting her next financial goal, so that makes me happy - less out of pocket for momma!  :)

Quincy started a new job.  Her first official job as a CNA after passing her boards and getting her license!  She is working a later in the day shift and said that her first day went well.  I hope it will be a good job for her!

One night this week, I had a meeting where I needed to park the bus, say hey to the people at the house, and jump into the car to run back to town.  It was an important meeting, as we had a midnight deadline to meet, and my engineer was a little tied up with other projects, so we were finishing it last minute.  I started to leave, to realize my phone was ringing.  It was Saige - she was hysterically telling me there was no way she could do her chores, no way because there was a frog in her feed sack!  SHREEEEKKK!  Luckily, Clayton has been coming home with us after school, and he is not afraid of frogs.  He saved me from being late, and saved Saige's life from the terrible, mean, biting and possibly murderous frog!

Calendar flippin thoughts

First off, I will always love October.  Not just because it is my birth month, but because it is an amazing month full of fun, and good times and the BEST holiday of the year!  I love the decor, and the fall flavors, and breaking out a jacket, and sitting by a firepit, and hot chocolate, cooler weather, and pumpkin pickin!  Everything about it is fun.  This year, though, I think I was especially happy to turn the calendar page.  September was a brutal month.  I did not enjoy it much at all.  It sucked as a matter of fact, and I am happy to leave it behind.
I got these photos of Wrenley from Madison.  It cracks me up how she terrorizes people.  She is literally just giving him a hug - but he knows.  He knows that she loves hard!  At least she can hold her own right?

Evie got to go to Disney - Wrenley got a Bluey Halloween decoration.  Same thing right?

Evie did a nice job of spending Grandma Rachel's money - Wren was happy with her Stitch!

And Evie's teacher - Ms. O - was delighted by her new ears!
Side note - I love Ms. O.  She is an amazing educator.  She pushes the kids, but without being mean.  She has high expectations and big goals for them.  She also comes to their games, their gymnastics meets or anything else they invite her to.  She gets to know their families.  She genuinely loves her kids.  And it is apparent to me, as I have 5-6 graders begging me to get off the bus to give her a hug, that they love her too!  They never forget that she loves them for life.

Second side note - Mallory is loving her new job.  She is excited about teaching again.  She is happy to be allowed to actually teach again.  She is happy, and it shows.  I am happy for her to be back in her element - thriving and doing what she has always loved to do.

Evie is also thriving at school - she got the finest character award!  I love this little girl and am dumfounded that she is growing up so quickly!  Good job kiddo!  We are so proud of you!

And I am excited that Lawson finally likes me!  It is from me bringing him eggs, but whatever it takes I love this little dude!  He is funny and sweet!  I mean sure, he still loves Amy (and Hannah) more, but at least I am in there now!

Know what happens at 2:30?  I have to leave to drive my afternoon bus route.  Know who has figured out that she will be put in her kennel at that time?  And who decides that she must be carried inside?  She is a truly a very smart girl.   But the most stubborn animal I have ever seen!  Jim probably says the same about me.  :)

Speaking of Jim, he got himself a rock from the KSU alumni people.  They had several different ones, but we both like classic Willy!  I like it a lot!  Looks good on my driveway rock pile!  We did seal it with some poly, hoping it lasts a very long time!

Tomorrow will be one month since my brother passed away.  It is not any easier now than it was then, but we are surviving.  I was thinking about how weird life is.  You live doing all the things that society says you have to do.  You take care of your kids, and work your job(s), and maintain your house, and work on your marriage, and manage your money, and cook meals and do laundry, and all of it takes an incredible amount of your time and energy.  And then one day, you are just gone.  Gone from the people you love, gone from your job and your responsibilities and your obligations.  And the world just keeps going on.  It is weird that we barely stop to acknowledge the gone part.  And then your loved ones have to figure out how to pick up the pieces and keep living as if everything is normal.  Nothing is normal.  It is weird, and awkward, and sad. I wonder if where we are as a society is somehow connected to the idea that as long as you live, you must keep carrying on, even when your heart is broken.
