Happy Thanksgiving!

We had a nice, but fairly quiet Thanksgiving here at home.  Cameron was supposed to come in, but Lauren got sick, so they stayed in Baton Rouge.  Colin was on call, and stayed in Wichita with Spencer’s family.   Madison and her family went to Virginia to celebrate the holiday with Andrew’s dad.  Quincy was lured into working all day with the promise of holiday pay!   My mom and dad and  Jim’s mom joined us.  We had a lot of good eats, watched some good games, and enjoyed a quiet kind of day.

Lauren and Cameron sent me a couple of cute pictures of their day.  I accused Cameron of making jumbalaya with hotdogs.  He swears it was sausage.
I hope Lauren is feeling better!   We missed all the big kids!   Except for Mallory, who came out, helped me clean and cooked most of the meal!

Thankful, happy and blessed that even though we weren’t all together, we are rich in family love.

Happy birthday to Jim

Today is Jim’s birthday.  He is easy to please- a little lunch at the Feed Bunk, a nice evening with the girls at home, a little homemade Chinese food, followed by some German Chocolate brownies - happy birthday boy!  He even let us sing to him, and consented to a photo.

As you can tell, I pressed my luck with too many photos!  He loves me.  ;)

Jim has had a rough few months at work.  Today was no different, as they are wrapping up the water project, and people are never happy.   But he still stays kind to people.  The people in town absolutely love him, and it’s simply because he listens to them when they talk.  He helps them with anything and everything, even going way, way outside of the duties of his job.   Jim is a fixer.  If he has it within his power to fix something, he will.   When there are things I need fixed, I sincerely appreciate this trait.  When he is fixing literally all of the problems of every person in town, I admit that sometimes I encourage him to tell people to stick it.  He never listens to me. It just isn’t in his nature.  He is sweet, kind, and helpful.  We are so lucky he is ours. He’s a good man.   I am also relieved that since he had all of his friends send bottles of Heinz 57 sauce to Jay when he turned 57, we didn’t receive any in retaliation.  57 sauce is the worst kind of sauce!
Happy birthday Jim!   We love you!

Weekend of parties

This was a catching up kind of weekend.  Last week, we had to cancel Saige’s birthday party, so we had the make up this weekend.  Friday night, she had 3 friends over.  I failed to take pictures while they were all here, one chose not to spend the night.   These girls squealed, giggles, and put away as much food as any group of teenage boys I’ve ever seen.  I think it was a success.  At least Saige seemed happy.

Friday was also Rock Your School day at Mallory’s school. I let  Quincy take a day out of school to help her. Quincy said it was fun, but she has no idea how Mallory hangs out with that age all day, it was exhausting. I got several cute videos and photos from the day.

Today was Langsgiving.  We hosted it at our house.  There were a lot of people here, but not as many as usual. I was still happy to see the ones who could make it.   Always fun to see my family!

This is a 2 day week for the kids.  I am almost as excited as the kids!  Let’s go break!

Interactive concert

Tonight was Saige’s 5th grade band concert “first look”. In the years and years I have been attending concerts, this was a first.   They had the parents sit behind their student.   That way we got to see what they see, and sort of be a silent part of the process.
I enjoyed this.   Unfortunately, Jim had a meeting so grandma had to stand in for him.  Evie sat in with the band too, and played her pretend clarinet.  It was cute.
Saige did a really great job!   She has worked really hard and I’m impressed with what she has learned in 2 short months!   Always a band fan!

Happy 11!

Today is Saige’s 11th birthday.  I don’t know if you know this about Saige, but she is the pickiest eater I’ve ever seen.  When asked  what she wanted for her birthday dinner, she responded spaghetti with no meat or sauce (noodles), Christmas crack, and ice cream sandwiches.   NO cake!   Ummmm
I did make her requests, but I cooked meat sauce for the spaghetti for those of us who aren’t crazy!
Saige had her birthday party ruined by mom being in the hospital.  We will try again this weekend.
Saige is a little dramatic, and enjoys the family baby status.  She is also incredibly sweet and tender hearted. She loves her critters, and is amazing with Evie.  She’s well spoken and enjoys giving her opinion on a variety of subjects. Sometimes we are shocked at her insight, sometimes we are shocked at her inappropriateness.
Happy birthday to my Gracie girl!  We love you so much!

Thankful

This week was insane.  We had a ton going on.  It was Jim’s tough week (the one week a month where he has council meetings, court, zoning board, and more stuff than I can keep up with).  I had a couple meetings.  I had volunteered myself to work at a spaghetti dinner fundraiser.  Sometimes plans change.  Sometimes for not pleasant reasons.   I woke up Wednesday morning in extreme pain.  It was 2 am, and in my sleep deprived state, I convinced myself I had some sort of brutal flu.   I took some Advil, and hit the recliner.  It did not help.  I got up at 5 to run the bus route.  I felt like I had a person stabbing me in the side and kicking me in the back simultaneously.   I took a couple Tylenol and headed out anyway.  The longer I drove, the more I wished I had called in.   But it was too late.   I had a company coming to slip line a pipe, I have inspections I need to finish, and the weather was supposed to be in the 70’s. I was determined to muscle through.  I got to work, started gathering my supplies and the pain intensified.  I simply couldn’t take it anymore.  I called Jim and told him I needed him to get Evie from her bus and I was going home to take a nap.  I came home and laid down, but then I absolutely knew I was not going to make it without medical intervention.  My side hurt so bad!   I was happy our doctor could get me in before lunch.  At least with the nurse practitioner.  She looked me over, did labs, and told me although she thought it might be a bladder infection, her gut said I should get a CT scan to rule out appendicitis.   So she sent me on to Topeka.  I’ll spare you the details, but getting the scan done, getting it read, having them tell me to go home because it was a kidney stone and would just have to pass took 4 entire hours.  When they told me to go home, I was literally throwing up from pain, shivering with a fever, crying, and the side pain was so intense I would have let someone put me down.  I called my doctor back. The same nurse practitioner told me to go to the ER and she would call to have me admitted without having to wait.  Unfortunately, although they agreed to let me skip the ER process, they had no immediate beds available, so I sat in the ER for another 3 hours!   By the time they called me back I was desperate.  Literally would have agreed to anything just for some relief.  And as it turned out, there was a nephrologist on call.   I was on a bed 5 minutes when he came in, gave me pain meds and said ma’am, you are a very, very sick woman.  I reviewed your test results.  You have a large kidney stone causing a blockage.  Your kidney is inflamed and infected and your blood is septic.  We need to admit you right now and do surgery immediately.  So that is how I went from waiting for 7 hours, to having surgery 5 minutes later. I asked him if I could at least text my family first since they had no clue what was going on.   He said yea, I sent my husband and kids a text saying having surgery right now- and being admitted.   No time to wait for their response as they were wheeling me to surgery.
They placed a stent.  I had immediate relief.  That was not what they cared about at the hospital.  Sepsis is a bad thing to be diagnosed with.  They ran more blood cultures and blood pressures than I even knew was possible,  and refused to let me up, let me walk or let me get out of bed to shower.  I about went stir crazy because honesty, with the side pain gone, I felt just fine.
I finally got the green light to get out of bed on Friday.  Finally got released Saturday after promising to come to the outpatient center and have IV antibiotics for several days. I will have to finish the IV stuff, then take oral antibiotics for a few days and then will have to go in for an outpatient surgery to have the stone and the stent removed.  I am feeling completely normal.  As I was checking out on Saturday, the hospitalist literally told me he was so happy I was walking out of there, as he wasn’t convinced that would be the case.  That was a little eye opening.  I am very blessed that I was given another chance to live life.  I have thought about it a lot today.  I have tried really hard to live a life of no regrets.  I feel like my life is blessed beyond measure. I was given an amazing family, a great supportive (and goofy as hell) husband, the resources to never go hungry, or lack for work or a roof over my head.   I am spending the rest of the days I have left on this earth doing things that reflect how truly lucky I am.  And I thank God for his protection, and for putting me in a place with adequate medical care.

One thing I was sort of sad about, Cameron and Lauren were in Wichita this weekend for a wedding   The plan was to go down and spend Sunday with them.  I told Jim to take the kids and go.  The big boys decided they would drive up here instead.  Colin, Cameron and Lauren drove up.  We got pizza and all 8 of our kids were under one roof.  We also had Andrew, Evelyn and Lauren here!  We were sad Spencer had a test and could  not come, but having everyone else here was amazing and made me incredibly happy!

Preston and Andrew talked us into going to Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner.  I’m so happy I  felt up to going.
I am overwhelmed by how lucky I am!

Last night, Quincy went out with friends.  She called and asked if she could dye her hair.  We don’t care about hair.  At all.  I told her sure.  She FaceTimed  me instantly and it was an awfully good thing I didn’t say no!  Such a dork!

My mom watched Evie while I was laid up.  I cannot tell you how much I missed her crazy in my days!  She told GG that she gave me her cold, and that it made me have a stroke!   Today she told me she was glad my stroke was better.   Me too kid!  Me too!
This week - we do normal.  Repeat NORMAL!

November already?

I am just not sure what is happening to 2022....how in the world is it November?  Anyway, here we are I guess.
For the first time in probably 20 years, we don't have anybody playing winter sports.  No all day wrestling, no basketball games.  No FBLA winter activities to help with.  I feel like that should mean that we are bored at home, wondering what to do with all our free time.  So not the case!  Too bad for me, I seem to have filled life full of other activities instead!  It's fine.  Everything is fine.
This weekend, Evelyn spent the night with Aunt Mal.  Sometimes I crack up at the stuff they do together.  Evie was Mal's doctor.  Mal cannot go to work now, because she is so, so sick!  Mal seemed ok with this arrangement.  Not sure how the school is going to feel about Mal missing her personal development day due to being diagnosed by a 3 year old doctor?

Saturday, we had a shower for my nephew Garrett's girlfriend.  They are having a little boy after Christmas, and we are all excited!  Evie keeps telling people she is going to be a "big cousin."  I thought this was probably the cutest cake I have ever seen!

Bailey and Garrett got a lot of very nice stuff for their new guy.  Evie had fun bringing the gifts over for Bailey!  It was a nice shower, and I am excited to meet our newest family member!

Colin and Spencer flew into Baton Rouge to visit Cameron and Lauren.  It makes me happy that Lauren is so good about sending me photos!  She gets my love for all the pictures!  The other thing that continually makes me happy is seeing my adult children as friends.  I think they look like they are having fun!

Also, I love both of these girls.  I like how they have meshed into the family, and how sweet they both are.  We are lucky to have them!  I am sure they both think we are absolutely insane, redneck weirdos but that's ok.  They just go with it.  My boys did good.
Another thing I love, Sunday night dinner.  Having as many of the kids home as possible, catching up a little bit without having to rush off to somewhere.  It makes the week start off on a good foot.  Of course, it seems to have also become a night to do projects.  Poor Andrew never knows what he will walk into.  From getting electrocuted by the microwave, to installing speakers in Preston's car, he will always happily pitch in.  Madison did good too.

The past week was a bit of a fiasco, with some of us catching strep throat, trying to juggle all the stuff, sharing cars because Quincy is still looking for a new car, and who knows what else, but we made it.  This week is even crazier.  I am sure we will tackle it all, but I am still wondering where the times goes.  Seems like the weeks fly by!
