Today is Harper’s 10th birthday. It was a strange day for sure! We had big plans. Harper was to be the reader at the children’s mass in Scranton this morning. She was excited and we had practiced. Quincy is the sacristan for the month at our church, so I had made all sorts of arrangements, only to have our priest cancel mass due to snow. The kids and I all took off for mass in Scranton. The roads were actually pretty bad. We got to the corner, slid around, noticed the black top roads weren’t clear and I decided to turn around and go home. A friend who lives close to the church in Scranton covered Harper’s readings for us. I felt bad, but it just wasn’t worth the risk. The radio was saying winter storm warning too, so I nicely told Harper we would have to postpone her birthday party this afternoon at Sky Zone. She was disappointed to say the least. She didn’t cry, and said she understood but she was visibly sad. About that time the car slid a little and she perked up, and said yeaaaa I don’t want to die, or have to walk so we can stay home!
When we got back, she was still a little bit sad and so when Madison asked her what kind of cake she wanted she responded with “poop cake.” Never one to disappoint, Madison and Andrew fixed her right up!
We tried hard to make it a fun day for her, despite her plans getting trashed. We had her requested dinner (lasagna), and poop cake, did some crafts, colored and ended the evening making our gingerbread village. I think it was a good day for her!
Harper is quiet and introspective. She sometimes says things that are so in tune and observant it is amazing to me. She is also snarky, and makes me laugh with her ability to imitate people. She is kind, a good sister, and a great aunt to Evie! We all love her so much! Happy birthday Harper!
